Question

What is propitiation?

This is the biggest and most beautiful word of Part 3 of the Love of God series. Without looking at a biblical dictionary, give your best guess.

I've always understood it as the sacrifice for our sins...

Propitiation is the substitution, the sacrifice of Christ. He was our propitiation, our sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins.

Best guess. :)

propitiation?

Well let me think.

All that is going through my head
"Propitiation of our sins".

propitiation to take blame for someone.

Maybe I'm not sure.

Jenna, JT, and Adam,

You are all in the ballpark. I will answer it in my post on the depth of God's Love. By the way though, excellent answers. :)

In Christ,

I really enjoyed doing my posts on God's love, and I think you're doing a great job too.

Propitiation, I'm glad I know this one. As it happens, this is my pastor's favorite word, so I hear a lot about it.

Propitiation is when wrath or punishment that is due towards one subject is absorbed or satisfied by another. This is what the entire Old Testament sacrifice system was based upon, and what Christ ultimately fufilled on the cross.

Keep teaching in the Lord!

I've also heard propitiation as the appeasement of God's wrath. Jesus' death was the appeasement of the wrath of God for our sins.
Basically the same thing as everyone else has mentioned. :)
That word is one of my favorite words! :)

Propitiation...is Jesus satisfying God's wrath towards us for our sin. He bore God's wrath...paid the penalty for our sin. We deserved the punishment and death...but He bore it on our behalf. As a result...God accepted Jesus sacrifice, His wrath was satisfied.

Great question Joshua!

I always thought that Propitiation ment that it was one who took the just punishment from another.

Camden,
I have also enjoyed this series as well. It has taken a lot of extra study, but it was well worth it. I can't wait to get into the Holiness of God. That study will be awe-striking. Thanks for the kind words and I am always encouraged by your blog posts as well.

In Christ,
Joshua :)
